Schleswig-Holstein is Germany’s northernmost state, located between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. Its capital is Kiel, home to the Landtag and one of Germany’s major naval bases and the start of the Kiel Canal (Nord-Ostsee-Kanal), the world’s busiest artificial waterway. The state borders Denmark to the north. Flensburg and Lübeck (a UNESCO World Heritage city and birthplace of Thomas Mann) are other important cities. The head of government is the Ministerpräsident/in.
